Snapshot Of A Day In The Life Of An Eczema Patient

An eczema patient begins his or her day by taking a quick bath or shower in warm or lukewarm water. She uses a gentle soap or cleanser such as Dove or Neutrogena in the shower or perhaps a non-soap cleanser such as Cetaphil. If she is suffering an eczema flare-up then she might decide to wash her body with sorbolene cream or just plain water. She is gentle with her skin, never tugging or pulling it and she pats it as she cleans herself, never rubs sore, sensitive patches of skin. Sometimes she will use emollient oil in the bath, such as Oilatum Cream or Oilatum Plus, Aqueous Cream (UEA), Epaderm or White Soft Paraffin.

After stepping out of the bath she will apply moisturizer to her damp skin in order to lock in the moisturize and increase the lubrication in her skin. Her best choices for moisturizers include Vaseline (the tried and true moisturizer, which is also very cost efficient), Alpha Keri, Aquaphor, Curel, Lubriderm, Moisturel or Eucerin.

For the three meals of the day she will eat healthy but avoid certain foods in her meal preparation if her eczema is related to a food allergy. These foods include egg whites, cow’s milk, wheat, soybeans, peanuts, shellfish, tomatoes, oranges, strawberries and lemons. If she happens to eat out at a diner or restaurant or go over to a friend’s for lunch or summer she will politely find out whether or not any of these food items will be served and will choose alternate healthy choices.

If it is very hot or humid outside she will stay inside and relax, choosing to run errands or exercise early in the evening when it is cooler. This should help decrease her chances of an eczema flare-up by not allowing her to sweat excessively or overheat. When doing chores around the house she will always wear rubber or vinyl gloves as well as a facemask and she will be very particularly about the type of household cleaners, detergents and disinfectants she uses. She will take these precautions as well when she dust but she will do her best to ensure that dust never has the opportunity to build up too much in her home. When she does her laundry she will use the mildest detergent possible and will make sure to run her clothes through the rinse cycle not once but twice. When she hand washes her clothes she will also use the mildest soap possible and she will rinse in cool water twice, but she will wear gloves to do so.

She will use plenty of fans and/or air conditioning in her home during the summer months and a humidifier (especially in her bedroom) during the winter months. She will do everything she can to keep her stress levels low, and she will surround herself with family and friends and enjoy good times and lots of laughter as often as possible. When she does get itchy she will apply a topical steroid cream to her skin and she will not wear any wool or scratchy materials whatsoever.

Before bedtime she will go through the same moisturizing process as she did in the morning. And she will take or apply her meds as required. She will drink plenty of water throughout the day and will slip into bed for a good night’s rest, making sure to get her eight hours of sleep.
