Scratch That Itch Dealing With Adult Eczema

Nobody enjoy the feeling of dry, itchy skin. Often the drier it becomes, the itchier it gets and scratching is the only thing you want to do! Scratching that itch unfortunately can lead to any number of secondary infections and is one of the worst things you can possibly do. Patients who suffer from eczema, especially those who have a severe case of it can develop any number of bacterial and/or viral infections from breaking the skin from excessive scratching. Some examples of problems that can result include staphylococcal and streptococcal bacterial infections, warts, herpes simplex, viral molluscum. Other problems that can result from tearing the skin include crusting, scaling and weeping and/or bleeding of the skin which allows infections to take up residence, swelling around the lips known as cheilitis, small, rough raised bumps on the skin’s surface and eyelids that darken in color in response to the threat of illness.

Eczema is a skin condition that afflicts an average of fifteen million Americans every year. That equals a great deal of itching which can cause the skin condition to worsen considerably! One of the best ways to deal with adult eczema is to keep your skin as well hydrated as possible. This means faithfully moisturize your skin morning and night (and more if necessary). Use emollient oil in the shower or bath and choose a soothing moisturizing cream or lotion to apply to your skin when it is still damp from your shower. Moisturizing creams or ointments are preferable for eczema prone skin over lotions, which are water-based. Good choices for soaps or cleansers to use when you bathe include Dove, Neutrogena or Cetaphil. Excellent choices for moisturizers include such names as Aquaphor, Emu Oil, Alpha Keri, Curel, Lubriderm and Vaseline.

When itching it at its height, look to a variety of ointments to help manage the flare-up, and give you much needed relief from your symptoms. For mild cases of eczema try an anti-itch cream such as Doxepin or Pramoxine, although these creams work best when there is only a small area of affected skin. Patients with eczema are sometimes prescribed corticosteroid steroid creams for their itch. One of the most well known brands is Glucocorticoid. Mild to moderate cases of eczema work best with Desonide or Hydrocortisone while the severest of cases calls for Clobetasol Propionate which is one of the most potent of all of the steroid creams. It is important to discuss possible side effects of steroid creams with your doctor before you begin to use one. Steroid creams cannot be used consistently as there is a risk that they will thin the skin and also cause premature aging to take place. Instead they must be used one week on, a few week off and so on.

Topical immunomodulators are topical ointments for eczema sufferers that have made a big splash in the fight against eczema symptoms. So far they are proving to be very successful. The two most well known brands include Dougan and Elidel, which are pimecrolimus and ProTopic which is a tacrolimus. Topical immunomodulators work by suppressing the immune system at the site of the skin problem.
