Effective Emollients For Your Eczema
One of the single best ways to keep eczema from flaring up is to keep it well moisturized each and every day. What this means is choosing an effective emollient for your skin. An emollient helps cut down on moisture being lost from the skin and it goes a long way in reducing the dryness that is often seen in cases of eczema. Emollients provide a barrier to hydration thereby making the skin much more comfortable, less tight and definitely less dry and less inclined to itching. Moisturized skin is healthy skin and keeping the moisture in should always be a priority for those suffering with eczema, whether it is a mild, moderate or severe form of eczema. Emollients are extremely safe to use on a daily basis and in fact should be applied morning and night, and sometimes in the severest of cases, more often. Emollients can be found either in ointment, cream or lotion form. Creams and lotions are the best for those who suffer from mild to moderate cases of eczema (or what is sometimes referred to as ‘wet’ eczema). Ointments are the best choice for those with the driest skin of all as well as severe eczema. Emollients can either be used as a cleanser or soap substitute in the bath or shower (an emollient oil is best for this purpose) or else applied to the skin afterwards for moisturizing purposes. Always apply an emollient moisturizer to your skin when it is still damp as this is an added way to lock in moisture.
There are a number of excellent emollients on the market and it would be in your best interests to try out a sampling of many of them and then decide which one best suits your particular type of skin. Trying an emollient out on a test spot of your skin is probably a very good idea as not everyone will be to your liking.
Keep in mind that to be their most effective, emollients should be applied to the skin twice a day, once in the morning and right before bedtime is a good rule for eczema sufferers to live by. Emollient ointments contain a lower percentage of water whereas cream formulas contain a higher one, therefore creams must be reapplied more often.
One of the most common emollients to be prescribed by physicians for eczema patients living in the United Kingdom is Aqueous Cream. This cream is a light form of emollient but is not the best choice if your skin is very flaky. Also this emollient is to bathe with not to use on the skin as a moisturizer afterwards. Other popular emollients include Balneum bath oils and Oilatum. Two emollient creams that are excellent for cleaning oneself with are Doublebase and Deprobase. These type do double duty and can be used in the bath and also afterwards for moisturizing. Many doctors recommend that their patients use an emollient that is a combination of white-soft paraffin and liquid. For those who are plagued with chronic itching, Epaderm Ointment, Eucerin (in cream or lotion formula) and Sebexol are all equally good emollients.
